Meet financial goals

What Does It Feel Like to Achieve a Lifetime Financial Goal?

Do you remember the feeling you had when you last accomplished a difficult goal? Many people talk about setting goals, especially around New Year’s Day. Few people talk about what it feels like to accomplish a difficult or audacious goal.

It really can happen, of course, and it happens every day. Some goals tend to be more commonplace: graduating from school, buying a first house, having children. Others are a bit more ambitious, such as running a marathon. For these goals we experience the joy of accomplishment. However, lifetime financial goals tend to be more momentous and need to be celebrated.

Two of our clients hit their retirement savings goal last week (helped along by a record market). In one week, we had the joy of witnessing the unbelief, happiness, and optimism they each felt for their future. I could tell these individuals would now wake up each day with a new energy in their spirit. Neither one was going to change their lives overnight. However, in both cases, it was obvious that they saw the world (and their place in it) in a very different way. It reminded me WHY setting lifetime financial goals and persisting to achieve them is so important.

Each day a person who has successfully reached a lifetime financial goal wakes up and puts on an invisible “Superman” t-shirt.  In their own personal way, that person has accomplished something that once seemed impossible. They are now ready for more challenges.

I’ve noticed three common traits among those who achieve a lifetime financial goal:

  1. The goal or specific dollar amount is imbedded in their subconscious.
  2. Even when it is not obvious, they are always taking steps toward the achievement of that goal.
  3. When progress is not being made, they make major changes to get back on track.

So, the next time you see a new Wimbledon winner or a golfer put on the green jacket for winning the Masters tournament, play close attention. Notice the tears of joy, family hugs, and how the winners appear almost speechless. For those who have achieved a lifetime financial goal, the feeling is similar. While there isn’t an audience of millions of viewers to witness the epic moment, you may be sure that the magic, elation, and euphoria is there. In their own personal way, that is the experience of those who have achieved a lifetime financial goal.

As always, we are here for you. Please email or call if you want to set up a Zoom videoconference meeting or talk by phone.
