The Times They Are A-Changin’
Come gather ’round people
Bob Dylan. (1964) The Times They Are A-Changin’.
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin’
And you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’
Bob Dylan wrote this song in 1964 at the ripe old age of 21½. If he thought times were a-changin’ back then, how must he feel today? Sixty years later is he swimmin’ yet? Or has he capitulated to the times? That’s what Nancy Sinatra has done. Yes, the “These Boots Are Made For Walking” daughter of Frank posted the following Tweet during this week’s Grammy Awards:
I feel her pain. Were I not driving my granddaughter to Central in the mornings and listening with her to the Taylor Swift Pandora station, I wouldn’t have known any of the recipients Sunday Night except Bonnie Raitt. The Times They Are a-Changin’.
I did receive an email later this week that contained interesting “Retro” information about a musical device from my High School years – my turntable. It seems that vinyl albums are making quite a recovery.
Here’s the list of the top ten vinyl albums sold in the U.S. last year:
Sadly, I have no idea who Olivia Rodrigo, Kendrick Lamar or Tyler the Creator happen to be. And while I love the Rumours, Thriller and Abbey Road albums, their relative numbers are pitiful. Where are the Led Zeppelin, Linda Ronstadt, Crosby Stills & Nash, Dan Fogelberg, Eagles and James Taylor albums? More importantly, where’s the Bob Dylan music? Alas, the times they are a-changin’.
Yet, in order not to be an old fogey, I reflect on another verse from Mr. Dylan’s song:
Come mothers and fathers
Bob Dylan
Throughout the land
And don’t criticize
What you can’t understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin’
Please get out of the new one
If you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’
May you “continue to lend your hand” and enjoy your music of choice as you move through the stages of life. If there are any weighty matters where we could be of assistance, please call or email.
