The Power of Kindness
In a thrilling finish, golfer Bryson DeChambeau won the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 by one stroke over Rory McIlroy. DeChambeau made a crucial up-and-down from a bunker on the final hole to secure the victory. This was his second U.S. Open win, with his first coming in 2020 at Winged Foot.
While the golf was exciting, observing Bryson with the fans, media, and other players was the best part of the tournament. Often known for his controversial persona, he has changed – exhibiting notable acts of kindness that have significantly contributed to improving his public image.
This kindness is reflected in a respect for the fans, humility, and gratitude. He has matured and understands his role to entertain and give back to the fans. He took time to sign autographs before and after each round, interacting with everyone. During the last round of 2024 U.S. Open, after the fifteenth hole, he took time to sign a disabled kid’s hat without being asked.
After his win at the U.S. Open, he stayed to allow every fan to touch the Championship Trophy and sign autographs. When he returned to the neighborhood where he was staying after midnight he was greeted by more fans, and he spent time with them.
At the PGA Championship, he stepped in when someone tried to steal a ball that he had thrown to a child, turning an unpleasant situation into a positive experience. He also congratulated winner Xander Schauffele after losing by a single stroke at the PGA Championship.
In his press conferences he is happy and content. DeChambeau has reflected publicly on the importance of humility and open-mindedness, suggesting a deeper commitment to personal growth, and giving back to the game. His actions and reflections reveal a more compassionate, mature, and considerate person.
He has developed a popular YouTube channel that highlights his humor, approachability, and fun-loving personality.
His behavior and interaction with the fans have reshaped his image with golf enthusiasts. Through kindness, he has changed his relationship with them so that he is now the most popular professional golfer.
Tickets for the LIV golf tournament in Nashville this week are sold out because of this new popularity. Merchandise for Bryson’s LIV team, the Crushers GC, is also out of stock.
I pay attention to (and collect) commencement speeches. Some of them can augment the lessons from Bryson’s focus on kindness.
Commencement speeches that focus on the theme of kindness often emphasize its profound impact on personal and professional success. Notable speeches highlight the idea that kindness is a powerful tool for building meaningful relationships and fostering a positive community.
For instance, in his address to the graduating class at Harvard University, author George Saunders underscored the importance of cultivating kindness as a lifelong pursuit. He reflected on how acts of kindness create lasting memories and enrich both the giver and the receiver.
Former President Barack Obama, in his speech at Howard University, encouraged graduates to practice empathy and compassion. He stressed that kindness can drive change and help overcome societal divisions, leading to a more inclusive and supportive society.
Actor and humanitarian Viola Davis, speaking at Barnard College, shared personal anecdotes that illustrated the transformative power of kindness in her own life. She urged graduates to lead with their hearts and to prioritize kindness as they navigate their careers and personal journeys.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker in his 2023 commencement address at Northwestern University made the point that in politics and business the kindest person in the room is often the smartest.
These speeches collectively convey that kindness is not just a moral choice but a strategic one, essential for achieving long-term success and fulfillment. Each speaker reinforces that by making kindness a deliberate part of their daily interactions, individuals can contribute to a more connected and compassionate world.
Bryon DeChambeau is a tangible example of how integrating kindness into your daily life will help you be happier, more content, and even more successful.
